At Vodafone India Foundation, keeping connectivity at the core is imperative in every initiative we take. The need of the hour was to utilize connectivity to foster empowerment in the sphere of education. The necessity paved way for our flagship programme on education – Learning with Vodafone.

Learning with Vodafone is India’s first multi-linguistic scholarship platform that has information about scholarships worth more than INR 15,000 crore including scholarships from institutes, corporate houses, high net worth individual, and State and Central Government scholarships in India. These scholarships have the potential to benefit more than 1 crore students across the country. The platform was created with the aim to help students benefit from this massive opportunity by taking care of the three basic hurdles they face – language barrier, scholarship filtration and application assistance.

Since most of the information about scholarships in India is available in English language, Learning with Vodafone translated the information in seven Indian regional languages – Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati and Kannada, incapacitating the language barrier. The platform is created in a manner where students can easily fill their information and find matching scholarships as per their credentials within minutes. Further, a dedicated multi-lingual call centre has been established as a solution for lack of application support in Indian scholarship ecosystem.

Since its inception in mid-August, Learning with Vodafone has received more than 33 lakhs page views, over 1.4 lakh active users and have got more than 1 lakh registrations. As 25000 students from Ghazipur alone registered on the platform, Vodafone India Foundation leveraged the opportunity and launched the field pilot of our flagship initiative at Ghazipur. Mr. P. Balaji, Director External Affairs, Regulatory and CSR, in the presence of Hon’ble Minister Mr. Manoj Sinha, introduced Learning with Vodafone for the first time with a grand event at Lourdes Convent Girls Inter College, Ghazipur.

Mr. Balaji presented Learning with Vodafone as an endeavour to connect scholarship providers with deserving students, provide information and support in the native language of students, using the power of connectivity. In his words, “Vodafone is committed to improving quality and reach of education in an increasingly Digital India. Walking the path envisioned by the government, our flagship programme on education, Learning with Vodafone, has been looking at innovative solution harnessing the power of a mobile phone. I take this opportunity to announce launch of a pilot project – Learning with Vodafone’s scholarship discovery and assistance platform. Through portal www.learningwithvodafone.in, our effort is to connect scholarship providers with deserving students, provide information and support in 7 languages to students. With our reach and the power of connectivity, this project could potentially benefit more than 1 crore students.”

Apart from announcing the significant initiative, we also felicitated three youths, belonging to Ghazipur, with scholarships to realise their dreams of continuing proper education. Talking about the huge number of registrations from Ghazipur Mr. Balaji said, “That’s a huge number but we have many more milestones to cross in a country like India. It is our privilege to share with you that we have also identified some youths from Ghazipur who have overcome significant adversity in life and shown tremendous courage and potential to scale new heights. They too are receiving scholarships from the platform today.” The students who received the scholarships – Rinku Yadav, Nainsi Moodanwali and Aarti Gupta were shortlisted basis their undying thirst for education despite the level of hardships they have endured in life.

Mementos of appreciation were also presented to members of various organizations and NGOs who helped us in channelizing the right students for scholarships and volunteering during the on-ground activities at Ghazipur.

As the event was organized at a school, it was vital to make it as motivating for the kids as it was for the eminent guests. We made a strong presence amongst the kids with an interactive photo booth, offline and online registration corner and distribution of creatively branded bookmarks, pencils and brochures. The event saw an enormous amount of participation from kids not just at the photo booth, where they were clicked behind the cut out of an astronaut and given framed photos on the spot, but also at the registration counter, where our bright volunteers were on their toes to help them during the entire process.

Mr. Sinha not just appreciated the event but also turned everyone’s focus on the benefits of Learning with Vodafone. He acknowledged the whole team of Ghazipur and Delhi for their efforts in profiling of the students among different schools and colleges, and making the event a success. Vodafone India Foundation, with the help of Learning with Vodafone, painted the event red and concluded it with a vision to empower India, one child at a time.
